take me back

TEAR YOU APART - CHAPTER 3: WOODEN BEAR

After what Rex felt like was an eternity or two, Lord Sinister returned to that little room once again to meet with his restrained and very disgruntled guest.

"You seem happy." Chuckled Lord Sinister as he closed the door behind him.

"What exactly were those 'important matters' you had to attend to?" Rex asked bluntly.

"Well, besides my brilliant plan to reclaim my rightful territory within Trick or Threat town, I was admittedly more focused on deciding what to do with you." He replied as he made his way back to the corner of the bed.

"Wait- Didn't you already say you were gonna keep me captive or whatever? Like, I-I don't know, put me in that dungeon you were talking about and leave me there until my flesh rots off my bones or something?"

Lord Sinister couldn't help but laugh at the smaller individual's description. "Oh, but where's the fun in that? You're a mentally unsound human with a death wish; I hold no grievances towards you, even if your humanity does inherently warrant it."

Rex was visibly unpleased by his first statement; being referred to as "mentally unsound" wasn't exactly something he was fond of, even if it was in some part true. At least I'm not on bad terms with him after all that, he thought. Why he even cared, he wasn't quite sure...

Lord Sinister continued his explanation. "Speaking of which, that gives us a bit of a problem; I can't exactly let a human wander loose around here, especially not when my entire army is also here with me. They would massacre you in a heartbeat." Lord Sinister then leaned forward and placed his hand on the other's shoulder. "Which, just for future reference, is a BAD thing. Got it?"

Rex's face twitched in slight annoyance. "...Yeah, got it."

The larger man smirked and quickly let go of him. "Good, at least there's some sense left in that little head of yours. But regardless, I've come up with two possible solutions. Option A: you continue to stay within this room indefinitely, or Option B: we make you blend in with the rest of my staff. Which would you prefer?"

Rex was no stranger to staying dormant in a single room for copious amounts of time, and while that was probably the easiest choice, he figured his psyche probably couldn't handle being left alone for that long. So, after a moment of thinking, he made his decision.

"Option B, I guess...?" He shrugged.

"Very well then." Lord Sinister nodded and quickly began to undo the other's straitjacket. "How do you feel about being recruited in an army of the undead?"

The question practically gave Rex whiplash. "Uh- S-Shit, I don't know- I don't really consider myself as "army material"... I-I mean, look at me-" Rex attempted to gesture down at himself.

"...You do raise a valid point. Perhaps it's just the fact that you're mortal, but to me, you look more like a meat shield than a soldier." Lord Sinister reached over to poke a finger at Rex's thigh, which managed to fluster the smaller individual.

"O-Okay, maybe don't look that closely-" Rex muttered sheepishly, which earned him another amused chuckle.

"Well, since you aren't fit to be on the frontlines, we do have a few positions open for witches and necromancers. That sounds like a relatively easy choice, right?"

Rex cringed. "Eh, I think I've had my fair share of metaphysical fuckery back home. Reminds me too much of my mother..."

That last part made Lord Sinister raise an eyebrow in curiosity, though he figured now probably wasn't the best time to start asking about some random person's family, so he decided not to question it.

"Well, the only other option I can think of is putting you with the vampires, but judging by your clear inability to afford proper dental, that seems to be out as well. Do you happen to have any other suggestions?"

"...I-If it helps any, I do pretty well with computers. I also know a few things about medical science. O-Of course, I wouldn't say that I trust myself enough to pursue a career in it, but-"

Somehow, that last bit of information seemed to grab the other's attention, and by the way he smiled at Rex, it seemed like that was all he needed.

"I think we can work with that."
